After serving 3 terms on the Cambridge City Council, chairing the Neighborhood and Long Term Planning Committee, and having a host of professional credits showing her humanitarian efforts to restore education and human development in communities, Denise Simmons won the Mayoral electorate vote in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is the first black openly lesbian woman elected to the mayoral position in the United States.
